Jan. 5, 2012 - Pat Mastelotto, the internationally-renowned drummer whose pioneering work with King Crimson, Mr. Mister and XTC has cemented him as one of experimental music and pop/prog-rock's most talented percussionists, releases Recidivate, a collection of outtakes, rarities and highlights from the past 20 years of his career on Mar. 20 via Trey Gunn's 7d Media.

"I've been making records for about 35 years," explains Mastelotto, "but never put one out under my own name.  I've never had that desire.  I like to collaborate, to exchange energy with musical pals, to start with nothing and leave hours later with something.   Over the years, I've been blessed to get to play on some wonderful music, with some special friends and felt it was time to let others hear these special moments."

A fortuitous meeting off the beaten track in Scandinavia has given rise to “Invisible Rays”, a spontaneous collaboration between two of the most innovative guitarists and one of the most explosive drummers on the planet. Trey Gunn (King Crimson), guitarist/improvisor Henry Kaiser (too many famous collaborators to list) and drummer Morgan Ågren (Zappa, Bill Laswell) first met at a music education conference in March, 2011 and within days were in the studio together.

"One of the most pleasant surprises in 2010 was Cocoon, the first U.S. release by Russian world music icon.

This retrospective, two-disc set includes over 2 hours of music drawn from Gunn’s catalog. Known for his work with King Crimson and as a pioneer of the touch guitar, Gunn has produced 8 solo recordings. For this dynamic mix of material, Gunn, a much sought after collaborator, has pulled in tracks from numerous artists he has worked with over the years. Music from Russia, Mexico, Italy and Finland is melded with his solo works in this fascinating collection.

"Cocoon", the first release of Inna Zhelannaya’s in the USA, is based on Russian folk songs. Inna is known combining electronica, trance and progressive rock with traditional songs from the different regions of her native Russia. Executed with the utmost care for these ancient melodies, meditative "Cocoon" has been acknowledged a boundary smashing work for Zhelannaya. The cd is co-produced with Trey Gunn and features his playing on several tracks.

King Crimson alumni Tony Levin and Pat Mastelotto join with Chapman Stick player Michael Bernier in this unique album featuring multiple Sticks. Levin, noted for the unique Stick opening riff of  “Elephant Talk” on the seminal King Crimson album ‘Discipline’, is a premier player of the instrument. Here the band showcases 56 minutes of hard-edged progressive rock, including an ominous rock rendition of Stravinsky’s “Firebird Ballet”. Trey Gunn has a name reminiscent of an Old West outlaw. He is also one of current progressive rock’s go-to soundmakers, mainly wielding his Warr guitar (a Chapman Stick-like instrument built to explore notes from bass to guitar range with a tapping technique), touring and performing with the likes of Tool, Brian Eno, and, most famously, prog giants King Crimson, of which he was a member for nine years and four studio albums.
